Understanding Public Versus Private Home Care
Publicly subsidized home and community care is arranged through BC health authorities after eligibility and care needs are assessed. Private home care is arranged directly with a provider when families want additional support, faster planning, different scheduling, or services outside a public plan.
Many families use more than one support pathway. Paradise Healthcare can discuss private home care needs, but eligibility for public programs is determined by the applicable public body.
How BC Publicly Funded Home and Community Care Generally Works
BC home and community care services are generally accessed through a health authority assessment. Some services may be subsidized, and some may involve an assessed client rate depending on the service and the person's circumstances.
Families comparing public and private care should ask what has been assessed, what service hours are approved, what the client rate may be, and what support is still needed at home.
Choice in Supports for Independent Living
Choice in Supports for Independent Living, often called CSIL, is a self-directed option for eligible home support clients. It is not universal funding and is not a general grant available to every family.
CSIL is designed for people who meet program criteria and can manage their own services, or who have an eligible representative or client support group. Eligibility is determined through the public process, not by Paradise Healthcare.
Private Home Care When Additional Support Is Desired
Private home care may be considered when a family needs support before public services begin, wants additional visit times, needs help around family schedules, or wants to combine services such as home support, personal care, respite, nursing care where appropriate, or specialty support.
Paradise Healthcare can explain service scope and scheduling options. It does not determine public-program eligibility or guarantee reimbursement from any plan.
Medical Expense Tax Credit and Disability-Related Tax Considerations
Some attendant care or medical expenses may be eligible under CRA rules, depending on the person, the expense, documentation, Disability Tax Credit status where required, reimbursements, and how the claim is made.
Families should keep receipts and speak with the CRA or a qualified tax professional. Paradise Healthcare cannot provide individualized tax advice.
Questions to Ask Before Arranging Private Care
- What care tasks are needed now, and what may change later?
- Is there a public care plan or health authority assessment already in place?
- Are any insurer, ICBC, VAC, or tax documents required before expenses are considered?
- Who should receive family updates, and how often?
- What service scope is appropriate for caregivers versus regulated nursing professionals?
How Paradise Healthcare Can Complement an Existing Support Plan
Paradise Healthcare may help with private home support, personal care, respite, nursing care where appropriate, dementia support routines, hospital-to-home support, palliative support, and other confirmed home care services. Support is planned around the client's home routine, family priorities, and the approved care scope.
